843-605-4282 A little History of the Limousine![]() Did you know that the first Limo was built in 1902, designed for the driver to sit outside under a compartment that was covered? Actually the word limousine derives from the name of a French region named Limousine, because this covered compartment really looked like the raised hood of the cloak worn by the shepherds back in the day. In another time the meaning has the chauffeur wearing a Limousin-style cloak in the open driver's compartment, to protect them from the weather.
What is commonly known as the “stretch limousine” now was actually created in the city of Fort Smith, Arkansas. This was around 1928 by a coach company named Armbruster. These cars were mostly used to transport famous “big band” leaders, such as Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, along with their bands and equipment. These early stretch limousines were often called “big band buses”. I read in Wikipedia that in 1916 the Society of Automobile Engineers defined a limousine as: "a closed car seating three to five inside, with driver's seat outside." A berline was defined as "a limousine having the driver's seat entirely enclosed", while abrougham was defined as "a limousine with no roof over the driver's seat. In German-speaking countries, a Limousine is simply a sedan, while a lengthened-wheelbase car is called Stretch-Limousine. Source: Wikipedia |
